"Just dare to take the step and don't be afraid of learning new things."
Model Citizen Media provides a platform to recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.
Tell us about yourself, why you are passionate about what you do, and your journey so far. I love to tell stories in a visual and fashion minded way: in between storytelling and fashion photography. Fashion is a way to express yourself, and I express myself through the lens. What are your goals and how do you see yourself progressing in the field? My aim is to eventually work for the bigger magazines, but also to develop myself as an artist. Not only personally, but also artistically. How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements? I'm a very easy going person, I like to share ideas and really working together, all for the better end results. I do admit I'm a little bit of a perfectionist, but until know that hasn't brought me trouble, haha. If you had to do it over again, what would you change? Maybe I would take even more risks. I've learned a lot since my 'apprenticeship' at fashion photographer Martijn Senders (October 2015-March 2017), which includes taking risks and be open for all options, but sometimes I'm still a little bit shy. But I'm still learning! Who is your hero, and how have they helped you get to where you are? My hero? That's a difficult one. I have always loved photography and fashion, but I've never thought of doing it until my friend said 'Just do it'. When I had the chance to assist Martijn Senders with shoots for fashion magazines and other jobs, I fell in love with this world and I am determined to be as good as he is. So in a sense, he's also a little bit of a hero to me, maybe more of a role model I guess? Last but not least my dad and my grandfather, they both were always busy with their camera and I think I just copied them in that way. So maybe it's in my genes after all! How important are creative education courses? Have you taken any, and did you find them useful? I find them very important and useful. When I was 17, I started my education in Fine Arts in Education, which I completed at age 21. Although I didn't end up working as a teacher, I did learned a lot during my education there. You're not only learning a lot about yourself, but you also learn how to see things, work with other people and the importance for younger people having a creative education. It's a way of expressing yourself, without using direct words. Do you have any tips for someone who is just starting out in the industry? Just dare to take the step and don't be afraid of learning new things. Everybody starts at one point, and is capable of growing. Two years ago I could not even guess that I would have my own studio and that I had the opportunity to work with so much other talented people with the same passion that I have. I'm not there yet, but it's the best decision I've made until now.
