Tell us about yourself, why you are passionate about what you do, and your journey so far. Hi my name is Kijeong Choi. I am currently a undergraduate fashion design student at Pratt Institute. I was always interested in forms of art and through fashion I found my medium. I love to experience the process of creating my works of art, seeing it transform from a static state into a live art piece when its worn. What are your goals and how do you see yourself progressing in the field? My ultimate goal is to become a fashion designer working with the idea of combining conceptual and wearable design. I love the idea of conceptual design not only being utlized to create a beautiful piece but also incorporating it in a functional aspect. I want to keep this idea at heart whenever I work. How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements? I always strive to keep a friendly attitude and maintain patience in any given task. I am always open to client requirements and would always love to fit in my own unique designs while keeping the client happy. If you had to do it over again, what would you change? Honestly I find no regrets or see anything that I would change. I love where I am at now and always look forward. Who is your hero, and how have they helped you get to where you are? My professors at Pratt Institute, Dean Sidaway and Judiann, they encouraged me a lot and supported me to explore my own personal style further. I learned many technical skills from them as well and overall helped me gain confidence and find strength even during the most stressful of times. How important are creative education courses? Have you taken any, and did you find them useful? At Pratt Institute while taking the fashion design course I learned the whole process of creating a collection set. This was very useful to me as it allowed me to become educated how the fashion industry works. Do you have any tips for someone who is just starting out in the industry? Maintaining a positive attitude and keeping confidence is definitely important. Also having internships at different places is also a great tip. This allows you to have many different experiences at various departments which is very useful in gaining knowledge and experience for the industry.
