"There is no greater feeling than hearing a client compliment our work, seeing our clients happy is what drives us and motivates us to do what we do."
Model Citizen Media provides a platform to recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.
Tell us about yourself, why you are passionate about what you do, and your journey so far. House of JM Designs is a fashion house that is owned by two young women, Kgomoco Matjila and Jacqueline Da Silva . We are both qualified fashion designers who studied at the Vaal University of Technology. We specialise in custom-made evening, formal and wedding garments. We also specialise in corporate branding in form of screen printing and embroidery. We are passionate about what we do because fashion designing allows us to use our creativity to make something beautiful that can build someone's confidence and can make them feel good about themselves. There is no greater feeling than hearing a client compliment our work, seeing our clients happy is what drives us and motivates us to do what we do. Our journey as fashion designers has been full of ups and downs but it's also been full of great lessons, every mistake we have made has been another lesson learned. Our business is growing stronger every year. What are your goals and how do you see yourself progressing in the field? Our goals for House of JM Designs is to build a business that will be synonymous with creating good quality garments for clients of any size. We would love to grow our business beyond the small town we are based in and have a bridal boutique where brides can either choose to hire or order custom-made wedding gowns. Our main aim is to target exhibitions and fashion shows which will expose us to a wider clientele. How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements? We always communicate with clients' by giving them a platform to air out their concerns, from the beginning of our fittings we will ask our clients' if they are happy with their garments and if they want us to change anything that they are not happy with. Yes we are always patient with our clients', running a business requires patience. We are always friendly to our clients', you cant run a business and be unfriendly to people. We are always open to clients' requirements, if a client wants something to be added or taken away from a garment we do it. If you had to do it over again, what would you change? We would not change anything we believe that everything that happens in life happens in order to build you into a better version of yourself. Who is your hero, and how have they helped you get to where you are? Our parents are our heroes. They have been nothing but supportive throughout the beginning of this business, we don't think we would be where we are right now had it not been for their support , love and constant reassurance in moments of doubt. How important are creative education courses? Have you taken any, and did you find them useful? We would love to take part in creative education courses. Do you have any tips for someone who is just starting out in the industry? In this industry you need a thick skin. You must be willing to work extremely hard to achieve your goals this means there will be times that you will work abnormal hours to get the job done, there will be sacrifices that you have to make in order to build a successful business. You have to love what you do otherwise you will give up when it gets tough and learn to always believe in yourself even when others don't.
