"This industry is pretty cut throat and they'll be honest about everything."
Model Citizen App is the platform where we recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.
Tell us about yourself, why you are passionate about what you do, and your journey so far. I'm a 22 year old mom who thought my modeling career was over for me when I found out I was pregnant at 21... Little did I know, it was only the beginning for me. It's a little more challenging than it used to be, as far as maintaining my figure and finding the time, but it definitely makes you push yourself and work harder than ever. What are your goals and how do you see yourself progressing in the field? My goals as of right now are to network and collaborate in Seattle as much as I can, while building and updating my portfolio, continue to workout every day, and be signed by an agency (hopefully Heffner Management) by the end of this year if not sooner. How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements? Being a mom, I have to be patient, which was never very hard for me anyway, but I can be impatient when it comes to photographers trying to give direction and them not being clear on how or where to pose to get the shot they're looking for. I am extremely friendly and bubbly, many would probably say I'm a little on the weird side- but in a good way! I'm always very open to any requests or requirements as long as it's not extremely out of my comfort zone. If you had to do it over again, what would you change? I would have to say not signing with agencies earlier on in life. I was always so stubborn and chose to do freelance and model on my own time and not be tied down or bossed around by an agency, but in the grand scheme of things, that's one of the only ways to be successful in this field. Who is your hero, and how have they helped you get to where you are? My mom will forever be my hero. She has supported me through everything in life, even if she didn't fully agree with something, she still supported me. She's the most beautiful, selfless, and understanding person I've ever met. She truly has the most genuine, radiating soul. How important are creative education courses? Have you taken any, and did you find them useful? I, personally, have never taken any creative education courses. I was almost scammed into them when I was much younger, but soon after was told I should never, ever, ever, pay for modeling classes. When it comes to acting, I think that's a different story. Do you have any tips for someone who is just starting out in the industry? Always. be. yourself. No matter how many times you're knocked down or told no, do not feed into the negativity and do not give up! This industry is pretty cut throat and they'll be honest about everything. Never take anything to heart or too personally if you're put down or criticized. Just take it for what it is, and if it's something you agree with them on or want more than anything, don't make excuses and work for it! Another tip I have is to work with as many photographers as possible. Versatility is a strong suit and so is a wide variety of work on your portfolio.
