"Experiences are far more valuable than qualifications."
Model Citizen App is the platform where we recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.
Tell us about yourself, why you are passionate about what you do, and your journey so far. I like photography because it captures the smallest of movements within the smallest of moments. I especially focus on people, because they are what I find most fascinating. I love that every image I take is different, because every person I shoot is different. What are your goals and how do you see yourself progressing in the field? I hope to one day be a published fashion/beauty photographer, therefore I am continuing my studies of photography on to degree level. How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements? I am quite open when communicating with other artists or clients. I am well aware that they have a vision of what they want from the shoot, and always try to combine our ideas to create the best possible outcome. I try to involve the client as much as I can within the photo shoot, by showing them the images as I take them and by asking for their input on the positioning and styling of the model. I find that this makes the shoot a much more comfortable experience for everyone involved. I also always try to have fun - I feel that the best images come out of a shoot that has a good atmosphere (and also makes for some great candid shots too!) If you had to do it over again, what would you change? If I had to begin my journey again, I would start it much sooner! I sort of fell into photography after a disaster with my original A Level choices. Only then did I discover that it was something that I was actually quite good at, let alone something I really enjoyed! Who is your hero, and how have they helped you get to where you are? I love Tim Walker's work. I think that his creative take on fashion photography has been a key inspiration to the direction of my work, and his work never fails to draw my eye. How important are creative education courses? Have you taken any, and did you find them useful? I think that creative education courses are massively important. As someone who is currently studying, I believe that there are some things that I have learned that are completely invaluable. Also, lower down in the education system, they allow an output for creative expression that most other core subjects do not. I know a number of people who have excelled in arts courses but struggled in academic subjects, that would simply be lost in the education system without the presence of an art department. Do you have any tips for someone who is just starting out in the industry? Learn as much as you can, and say yes to as many opportunities as you can. Experiences are far more valuable than qualifications.
