"Time management is very important in order to deliver our final product on time. Most of the time we are not able to have a fixed daily schedule as well.."

Can you tell us what makes you a good fit for this particular makeup artist position with the competition being so tough?

Being creative helps a lot as it distincts an artist from another. A good artist has to be able to apply various applications in a flowing manner. Experience is gained from practicing and excellence is achieved from working hard! That’s what I do!

Why did you choose this profession?

We all have our own way to express ourselves, and this works well for me! Every day is different and surely there is no boring routine, if there is a routine at all. This is what I enjoy doing and foresee to keep on doing for the years to come.

What are the biggest challenge makeup artists have to face?

Time! Time! Time! Time management is very important in order to deliver our final product on time. Most of the time we are not able to have a fixed daily schedule as well. We also have to remain up-to-date with the latest techniques because trends change through time.

If a customer asks for a style that you are sure would not suit them, how do you convince the customer to go otherwise?

I start off by acknowledging their desires and put forward my suggestions by explaining why a slightly different application would suit. If the customer is hard headed, I normally apply the makeup as requested on half of the face and do my magic on the other side! It always works!

How do you prepare dry and oily skin for foundation makeup application?

Before applying makeup on oily skin, a facial toner helps the pores to close, while dry skin requires moisturizer or else it would result in having cracks in foundation layer.I always have a good skin equalizer as a smoothing primer handy!

Do you have any experience in cosmetic retails?

Yes I do! Cosmetic retail is a complimentary service to the makeup application services I offer. Normally a happy customer would want to carry on having that look and it would be very disappointing for them to go home without that lipstick that made their eyes pop.

Tell us about your experience as a makeup artist?

I have been working in the makeup industry for over 2 years and I have been studying the art of makeup for nearly 5. Among my various certifications obtained, I am a VTCT fully internationally qualified makeup artist. I am blessed to have had the honor to work with international photographers, hair stylists, fashion designers and models at such a short period of time.

Name some you have covered?

Yes, I specialise in various makeup applications. The demand is high for wedding, fashion and photographic makeup. However, I do enjoy theatre performance and casualty simulation effects makeup as more creativity and technique is required. I have also offered my services during modelling shows and TV/Video productions.

What is the difference between applying makeup for a TV shoot and applying makeup for a live appearance party?

Thickness, sharpness and heaviness! Makeup for TV shoots has to be applied on a thicker concealer and foundation base with sharper, dense colours. On the other hand, a live appearance party makeup requires the makeup application to be set as natural as possible. In both instances, to accentuate the client’s likeable features so that the focal point is diverted from the unlikeable ones.

How often do you clean your makeup tools such as brushes and combs?

Hygiene is a number 1 priority. I wash and disinfect my tools before and after I use them on each and every client. It is a fact that makeup tools dent quickly if you clean them to often, but such cost comes nowhere close to the hygiene that each of my clients deserve.

How do you determine a client’s undertone before you decide what makeup technique to use?

By looking at the inside part of the client’s arm - if the veins appear as bluish/purplish, that means a cool undertone fits well, while a warm undertone goes well on individuals that have veins appearing in a blue-green colour.

Do you have any tips you'd like to share?

My advice is to always have passion and determination in what you do. And to always wear a watch to keep track of time!
