"Everything can be an inspiration, look for the beauty in even the most unexpected places."
Model Citizen App is the platform where we recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.
How did you get to where you are now in your career?
I took a huge leap of faith while doing basic family photography and went back to college in my 30's. I'm halfway through my course and although it's been such hard work with 3 children to juggle too it's been the most amazing experience of my life. Never fear the unknown, sometimes it holds the most magical secrets.
What is your opinion on modeling education?
I haven't attended modelling courses but having a model that knows how to move well and hold themselves is vital for me when giving direction.
What person has been your inspiration in life? Who is your hero?
My grandfather. He held such a passion for photography and I'm proud to own his old cameras and many of his prints.
Do you feel like you've met your goals?
No, I think as a creative you're always finding new goals. You're always striving to learn more and improve on the last shoot.
If you had to do it over again, what would you change?
Lots of things and nothing all together. Bad things happen but often they push us to a place where, creatively, it inspires us.
Do you have any tips?
Practise, don't be afraid to try new things and above all follow the advise that was given to me by someone very special to me. Let me see you break out the box, do something different, do not fear others opinions.
How do you stay inspired?
Music, movies, reading, art. Everything can be an inspiration, look for the beauty in even the most unexpected places. Listen/watch/read things that aren't your usual style.
What photography related things do you recommend?
To not be afraid of trying new things. Lighting is vital but play with it, look at shapes, shadows and how it bounces off different things. Use that.
What's your favourite camera?
Oooh now any hasselblad would be spectacular but I love my nikons. The D810 is stunning and my trusty old D7000 is my old workhorse. I'm hoping to get a D500 this year to play with too.
What is your most memorable experience?
I worked with a fire hoop artist once and we ended up in a Scottish ruined castle at 5 am shooting some spectacular shots when she ended up stuck in a stone wall crevice while I was shooting her behind the hoop. That made for an interesting manoeuvre out.
