"Looking back at when I started out, my work has changed drastically."

Model Citizen App is the platform where we recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.

How did you get to where you are now in your career?

I started in event photography, photographing community events and smaller assignments in the beginning. Later, I moved into the corporate scene offering executives corporate portraits and business event coverage which were higher paying jobs. In summer 2016, I completely re-branded with a new website and while I continue to offer the corporate packages, I advertise and showcase my latest fashion, beauty and portrait work on the website.

What is your opinion on modeling education?

Well, I've worked with agency represented models and non rep'd models too. I can see value in model courses mainly because posing and direction can be challenging especially if one is not sure of the usual looks within the industry. Facial looks, hand placement and eyes and mouth can really tell a persons mood - what kind of day they're having, what problems they are expressing, and so on.

What person has been your inspiration in life? Who is your hero?

I look at fashion/portrait photographers like Richard Sibbald and Dexter Quinto and aim to produce work with strong impact that they both would approve of.

Do you feel like you've met your goals?

Looking back at when I started out, my work has changed drastically. I have seen my own growth in the industry and look forward to growing some more. It's a journey of learning no matter what experience level we are at.

If you had to do it over again, what would you change?

I probably would have incorporated my fashion and beauty work earlier on in my business if I were to change anything.

Do you have any tips?

Start young, keep pushing forward. There are negative voices in the industry and some are not always encouraging of new photographers. The new crop of photographers become quite skilled and sometimes rather quickly. Keep going.

How do you stay inspired?

Looking at others work. It's refreshing and inspiring at the same time.

What photography related things do you recommend?

Subscribe to CreativeLive, an online classroom offering many Live and paid courses from top photographers around the world. Great for professional development.

How can people reach you for a job?

Find me on the web here: www.alexsarnaphoto.com and my contact info listed on the site. Feel free to e-mail or call for a quote and package needs, or just to grab a coffee!

What's your favourite camera?

Nikon D610 for day-to-day work since May 2015. Still love the trusted D300, but now with the new Hassleblad medium format, we may see some shifts with camera choice among certain higher-end photographers.

What is your most memorable experience so far?

I recently booked Susha, a local agency rep'd model in Ottawa, Canada. I found her on Model Mayhem and we connected that way. Find Susha on Instagram here {@sa13aaa} and on Twitter here: https://twitter.com/Sa13aaa Photo Credit: © 2016 Alex Sarna, www.alexsarnaphoto.com Model: Susha B (make-up and clothing provided by model).
