"Make as many mistakes possible while you’re an amateur, go out there and shoot everything possible and learn something from it."
Model Citizen App is the platform where we recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.
How did you get to where you are now in your career?
Never dreamt of being a photographer, pick up the camera when i was 24 and made it happen. Shooting fashion weeks across New Zealand, Australia and India
What is your opinion on modeling education?
Self Taught photographer, learnt a lot by assisting established photographers.
What person has been your inspiration in life? Who is your hero?
Loved the work of Richard Avedon and Patrick Demarchelier. Always looked at their work in fashion magazine and tried to understand how the set was lit.
Do you feel like you've met your goals?
Long way to go! Being shooting 5yrs at NZ Fashion week and 3years at India Fashion week. Still nervous before one and learn something new every time I go.
If you had to do it over again, what would you change?
Network more with people, not just social media but meet Stylist, Editors, Designers and have a conversation with them and understand their perspective.
Do you have any tips?
Make as many mistakes possible while you’re an amateur, go out there and shoot everything possible and learn something from it. Don’t get too caught up with the technicalities of the camera, focus on the art of story telling
How do you stay inspired?
Sourcing inspiration for mood boards for shoots is something photographers often struggle with I uses Pinterest, 500px and Instagram and then put my own spin on it.
What photography related things do you recommend?
Always check and pack your gear the night before the shoot!
How can people reach you for a job?
90% of my work is word of mouth and previous client referrals.
What's your favourite camera?
Love the medium format Mamiya 645's there is just something about the way they are built.
Tell us your most memorable experience?
Climbed up the highest mountain in the North Island of New Zealand to shoot a lookbook for a NZ Designer. People train for months to climb this peak we decided on a Sunday morning to go there and make it happen, rest assured got some amazing shots and sore body for the next week.
