"Modelling is a passion of mine that I wish to bring to a higher level of professionalism through extending my online portfolio."
Model Citizen App is the platform where we recognise fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world. Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them - their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.
Tell us about yourself: Why do you want to work as a model? Why are you interested in modelling as a career?
My name is Eli Colm and I am currently a modern languages student at the University of Edinburgh. Adding to my array of abilities as I build upon my career in entertainment, I feel that modelling nicely complements my background of music, theatre and film-making. Having grown up with photography in my family, I feel at ease in front of the camera as much as I do performing on stage. I believe that a modelling career could afford me unique opportunities and experiences, and I'm eager to show the world what I've got!
How important is modelling education: Have you attended modelling courses? What related courses or studies have you taken?
Personally, I haven't had any formal education in terms of modelling as such, but I think there are other disciplines that can be incredibly beneficial for a career in modelling. I grew up as someone who feels at ease in front of others, whether it be performing a musical instrument, acting in a show or, indeed, being a model in front of the camera. In my opinion, musical and theatre-based skills are absolutely transferrable and can greatly boost a career in this industry.
What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model?
You've got to be dedicated to your craft. Like with any other profession, true success only comes with hard work, consistency and an unyielding passion for what you do. Modelling is not about being the most beautiful of them all; rather it is about reaching out to an audience and speaking to them through visual means, convincing them, swaying them, capturing them. If you have a talent to do that, you are more than fit to be a model.
What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progressing in this field?
Modelling is a passion of mine that I wish to bring to a higher level of professionalism through extending my online portfolio. I am a dedicated individual, and work tirelessly every day to propel my career forwards and polish my professional image. Of course, networking in this industry is paramount to success, so building a foundation of strong professional relationships is the key to being the very best, I believe. Travelling is another passion of mine, and my pursuit of linguistic mastery of French, Spanish and Portuguese is testament to that. I hope that a career in modelling can afford me such experiences across the country and perhaps even further afield.
How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements?
As a linguist, communication is my life. Every day I think about it. Learning foreign languages really forces you to examine how we communicate with one another, and even makes you reevaluate how you treat and use your own language on a day-to-day basis. I am a very patient person, and a real listener. Communication isn't just about speaking, but reciprocating by listening as well. It’s incredibly important to be able to follow your clients' direction without a doubt, but what’s possibly even more significant is being able to take that direction and make it your own, making for a more natural, convincing effect.
Do you eat nutritiously? How often do you exercise or go to the gym?
I try my level best to take care of my body as much as I can by eating the right foods and physically pushing it to the limit to be the best version of myself. Working in a daily exercise regime into my day isn't so much tiresome as it is energising for me, because it allows my day to begin with a great start and affords me the motivation to go out there, meet my goals and push myself even further every day.
What is your dream role as a model?
As an actor, I hope that modelling can allow me to not only just pose for a photo, but enable me to settle into a role. Any work where I can really have the opportunity to portray a complex dynamic of human character is a dream for me, because I want to convey someone's hidden motivations, their aspirations, their fears, their past, present and future, all in one photograph.
Do you have any limitations? How do you define your boundaries when choosing to accept a modelling request?
I try to break my boundaries as much as I can, for defying your limitations leads to being the best that you can be, I steadfastly believe. Of course, I do have certain boundaries within reason when it comes to a shoot, of course, because I wouldn't want to agree to anything that could hurt my career. That being said, I am definitely not opposed to thinking out of the box and trying new things.
Would you like to travel?
I love to travel, and I try to take every opportunity possible to add to my experiences of visiting new places. Being a student does come with some time restraints, but being organised helps me to be more flexible and therefore more available for my line of work.
What was your favourite experience so far?
I must admit that my most memorable experiences stem from travelling the world, and visiting undiscovered corners of this Earth. From staggering geographical phenomena in Iceland, to the bustling cityscape of New York City, to the inexplicable serenity of the African desert, my most memorable time on this earth so far is absolutely the collective experience of travelling the globe, and I sincerely hope that modelling will only add to this over time.
