"You gotta be confident when you walk, and when you're having a photoshoot. It's the prettiest feature!"
Model Citizen App is the platform where we recognised fashion models, photographers, designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, creative directors, bloggers, stylists, and labels around the world.Every day, we feature an individual on Model Citizen Interviews. People get to know each of them- their hopes, challenges, aspirations and inspirations in life.
Melissa is our amazing Singaporean feature, being of Chinese-Indian descent. It's such a wonderful exotic mix, and makes her very unique. We love her photos, and we hope you do too!
What fascinates you about modelling?
I want to work as a model because I believe I'm different. Living in Singapore, it's definitely super hard to get jobs (especially editorials) because of my skin colour. I am Chinese-Indian so my skin is on the darker side and I have exotic features that don't make me look like a typical "Chinese/Caucasian" model. After recently seeing local magazines that feature dark skinned models like me, it has inspired me and I hope one day I could be featured in an editorial campaign or magazine to show other girls like me struggling in the modeling industry here that it's possible!
How important is modelling education: Have you attended modelling courses? What related courses or studies have you taken?
I haven't taken any modeling courses but I think it would be good for aspiring models who don't really know how to catwalk properly.
What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model?
Confidence and never taking failure as a disappointment. There will be times that you wouldn't get the job that you want and I think it's important that any model shouldn't feel horrible about it and in fact, treat that rejection as something that's gonna push you to go out and apply for more jobs and castings. Confidence is definitely important. You gotta be confident when you walk, and when you're having a photoshoot. It's the prettiest feature!
What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progressing in this field?
As a dark-skinned, local Singapore model, my goal is to be featured in any editorial campaign or magazine to show other girls just like me, that it's something achievable. I would love to progress to runways one day, but I have been told I'm a tad bit short (1.67m) :(
What do you know about advertising?
Being a communications student, I know quite a bit. Advertisements tend to cater to the "majority" of the population or the "desirable" features - skinny, fair, good complexion (talking about ads with models) and once you display an ad that features these "desirable" qualities, it tends to change the mindsets of people who don't have these desirable qualities.
How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements?
I'm a bit of an introvert but I do believe I can work well with photographers and stylists from my past experience. :)
Do you eat nutritiously? How often do you exercise or go to the gym?
I have several meals a day, with extra emphasis on carbs as I'm trying to gain weight to reach my target of 50kg. I haven't been exercising well because it's very very easy for me to lose weight. So once I start gaining a substantial about of weight, I'm going to start bulking.
What is your dream role as a model?
Editorial campaigns! The first dark-skinned Chinese, born-and-raised in Singapore girl on Harper's Bazaar and Vogue! And to inspire other girls like me to never give up.
Do you have any limitations? How do you define your boundaries when choosing to accept a modelling request?
The only rule I have is to work with strictly professional photographers and I need to know what the pictures would be used for.
State your availability: Would you travel? Work full-time, part time? Any hours?
As I'm in school full-time right now, I can only travel during the weekends.
