"I think having an original voice that is noticed and admired is the most important thing."
We love everything about Stefanie's designs; they have a raw and basic feel about them, yet evoke a strong sense of emotion and creativity. After seeing Stefanie's upcoming brand "Theives Like Us" on Instagram, we had to feature her on Model Citizen App! She has an interesting story as to how she came to be where she is today, and not surprisingly, it was through a lot of hard work. We hope you enjoy Stefanie's interview!
At what age did you start becoming fascinated with fashion?
I have always loved fashion and expressed myself through clothing. From a very young age I was obsessed with Audrey Hepburn which can be seen in my affinity for minimalism. I also was heavily influenced by early 70's punk scene when I was an adolescent and started deconstructing and making my own clothes.
How did you prepare for a career in styling?
I always made stuff. I did a summer program when I was in high school at F.IT. in New York. I also attended F.I.D.M after high school, I interned, and started working in the industry immediately after high school. I also did a lot of free lance styling for photoshoots.
How do you stay updated on the current trends?
I am constantly inspired by my surroundings. I love anything vintage, art/film. And I love music, and am often inspired by an album or decade/scene having to do with that. I also follow the forecast and street style.
How important is Fashion Week for you?
I love it and use it to make my colour story but that's about it. I honestly love the off duty model and street style you see surrounding it. I do get inspired but have always tried to do my own thing, and make my own mark, I think having an original voice that is noticed and admired is the most important thing and skill in being a designer.I haven't any particular goal. I accept or decline proposals when I have any good feeling.
What is your dream job?
I am fortunate to have my dream job. I am the creative director and co-founder of my line "Thieves Like Us".
What are your plans for the future? Where do you see yourself taking your styling career?
I would eventually love to open a lifestyle store and expand into homeware (soft furnishings).
Name the top three things in your styling kit that are must-haves?
Style kit are nipple covers (I know its funny but true, they are amazing!!!), binder clips, and black or white coloured safety pins.
Who is your favourite all-time designer?
Chanel. Because she came form nothing and did it all on her own. She also made such marks and advances for fashion and women. Getting rid of the corset, using usually menswear fabrics etc. I love everything about her.
