Featured Designer: David Paulus

"Enjoy Fashion! Enjoy your creativity! Enjoy everyone else’s success whilst doing your own thing and try very much not to chase just after commercial success!"

David Paulus (1986), born in Curaçao, (living since in the Netherlands from 2003) is one of the self-educated and self-supporting upcoming designers. David Paulus differs from most young designers in his vision. David creates ‘Art Couture’ and is in that way is non-conforming to the regular world of fashion. We are very excited to feature him on Model Citizen App, and we hope you enjoy his interview!

Tell us about yourself.

My creations are inspired by and based on my love for art. My shows are therefore more of a theatre piece than a classic catwalk presentation and always based on a theme”.

I have shown some spectacular themes such as “Alice & the dolls” in 2011 (one of his very first shows), “The birth of the psycho” in 2012 and “The Nutcracker” in the Talent Lab of the Amsterdam fashion Week in 2013.

I have also had the opportunity to follow internships with the great Chinese Designer Sheguang Hu working from Holland and Eco designers Ellen Willink and Kasia Markowska (Polish origin).

At what age did you start becoming fascinated with fashion?

I think I was around 8 years old, I made plastic clothes and dressed my nieces.

How do you stay updated on the current trends?

I try not to follow trends.

I look at magazines, the internet etc., but I do not so much so that I would be influenced by others, I want to do my own thing.

How important is Fashion Week for you?

Fashion week is important I think for all designers because you can present yourself better.

How do you choose your models during the fashion week?

If I do a show, I often work with solid models that I find enjoyable.

What is your dream job?

To start a fashion academy in the Caribbean

What are your plans for the future? Where do you see yourself taking your designing career?

I see myself teaching in the Caribbean, I want to share my knowledge/experience with others (students).

Name the top three things in your designing kit that are must-haves?

I think you always have to spend more money for basic pants, dress and a bag (clutch) all in black. These must-haves can be used more often in various combinations.

Tell us your most unforgettable experience as a designer?

My unforgettable experience was the Amsterdam Fashion Week 2013.

What is your biggest accomplishment as a designer? (awards and recognitions)

It could this year if I receive my first award, for putting together a positive image for Curacao. This award had been enriched by The Cabinet of the Minister Plenipotentiary of Curaçao (The Hague, Netherlands).
