"After my studies at Sciences Po Paris, I worked in the fashion industry for Dior, Chloé, and Lacoste to name a few. It was a dream come true, especially since fashion has the privilege to be a very concrete world: you draw something, and a few efforts later it's a real piece of clothing that you can wear and see worn. It gave me the strength and confidence to launch my label. I had this creativity and ideas burning in me; I needed a way to make them come true."
It is indeed amazing how we learn while we grow. The inspiration and passion about what you want to do are not enough without the support of the people we love and trust.
Not a long time ago, we decided to create Model Citizen Magazine. We first sent a few messages to a few brands, and no one has replied. We were rushing it; we had no idea how to get them involved. You see, every magazine has fantastic labels inside. It's where fashion brands get to either gain more sales or maintain their brand awareness. It's also where the readers get to see different products, which they had not heard or seen before, or simply just enjoy the amazing photos, and maybe inspire them to wear it. And there are few things to consider, whether people would like to see a price tag or a brand statement.
We just want to highlight what she said below "I had this creativity and ideas burning in me; I needed a way to make them come true." How many of us could claim we are creative and stay saying and believing it? And how many of us could go through challenges and achieve the things we want? How many of us are willing to take the risks? Cheyma did, and that she made those creative ideas come true. Let's learn a little bit more about Cheyma Ben Hassine.
Cheyma is young (surprised to see her photo on Linkedin) and we just both laughed about it. She was fun to talk to, for sure. She taught us a few lessons, and that's where we started to get more fashion labels on board.
What inspired you to start fashion label?
After my studies at Sciences Po Paris, I worked in the fashion industry for Dior, Chloé, and Lacoste to name a few. It was a dream come true, especially since fashion has the privilege to be a very concrete world: you draw something, and a few efforts later it's a real piece of clothing that you can wear and see worn. It gave me the strength and confidence to launch my label. I had this creativity and ideas burning in me; I needed a way to make them come true.
Who is behind fashion label?
Cheyma Ben Hassine, a 27-year-old French girl with a bachelor in political sciences and masters in fashion and luxury marketing with a passion for fashion and everything girly! And a great team of excellent contributors we can never thank enough.
How many team members do you have right now on board?
Right now it's only me, Cheyma, the artistic director and founder of the eponymous brand. But we're looking for a business manager and interns! So spread the word. Also, I would like to mention that the atelier has been doing the amazing work!
We love all your products! The products are amazing and superb, how long do you create them?
It all starts with the idea of a theme; it can be triggered by a conversation with someone, a lady passing on the street, or a good book. Once the theme is selected, it doesn't take much time to draw the whole collection, but it takes the world to let it settle for a while to decide which pieces will make the final cut. Afterwards, it's all conception and finishings. The whole process can take up to 4 months.
What is your vision for your fashion label?
Cheyma keeps nowadays women in mind at all times. We want to provide them with comfy-chic clothes that they will feel confident and powerful wearing.
What are your customer's most favourite collections?
The Whimsy Canyon one, the last one, had a big success. We presented it in February during the New York Fashion Week, it then waits to Paris, London, Dubai, and soon China.
What is your personal favourite collection?
I always say "this is my best collection!" When I'm working on a new one, so right now I'd say the collection that I'll present in New York next September. Hope you'll be there to see the show!
How did you discover a need for this type of product in the marketplace?
As all woman I'm sure, I get up every day struggling in front of my wardrobe: should I wear something comfortable and not look my best or endure a whole day in a chic attire (let's be honest, few chic clothes are comfortable). I have had enough of this dilemma and decided to create both comfortable yet sophisticated piece that could be worn from dawn to dusk without the need to change.
What has been the most challenging aspect of getting your brand off the ground and how did you overcome that?
Being known has been and still is the most difficult obstacle. People would love what you do, should they only knew you existed. Fortunately enough, people are very responsive to authenticity and feel the hard work behind our creations.
What are two aspects of business in which you believe a new brand should invest resources?
Image is the key. A brand should invest a lot in this aspect to be sure to precisely share its universe. You can have a fabulous collection and perfect clothes, if you take a picture of them with your phone, it's all useless. And communication, we live in a world where people are so easily reachable and more than happy to discuss with you. As a brand, you need to be talkative and eager to share with your audience.
What are the services that consumers can take advantage of from your company?
They can enjoy a piece of the Cheyma dream, become part of the CheymaGirl family (and soon CheymaBoy!), and proudly wear our comfy-chic whimsical pieces.
Any pieces of advice for young entrepreneurs who want to open similar labels like yours?
Have no fear; you'll have no regrets.
How do our readers buy your products? Do you ship internationally?
They can do so on our e-boutique, www.cheyma.com; we do ship all around the world.
Do you collaborate with fashion blogger? How do you collaborate with them?
We do a lot! Cheyma wouldn't be what it is without the great women who inspire the brand every single day. Bloggers are part of them. Some reach out to us, other times we set our eye on one we are particularly fond of, and then it's a match!
CHEYMA will have its Spring/Summer 2017 ready-to-wear fashion on September 10th- 4:15 pm in New York, and we are pleased to get invited. However, since we are not able to travel at this time, we will be covering it through their journalist and you'll see photos of the event directly from them! We are excited!
