"I am very passionate and confident about my art, and I see competition as a positive challenge. Every day I give my best, expand my creativity and make my customers happy."
For me, doing make up is a way to do art and express the creativity of my soul. Makeup, therefore, is something very powerful to me. It is full of challenges, and it requires talent, experience, patience, fantasy and brilliant ideas to master this art.
I am very passionate and confident about my art, and I see competition as a positive challenge. Every day I give my best, expand my creativity and make my customers happy.

How do you prepare dry and oily skin for foundation makeup application?
Before I start with my work, I carefully analyse the skin of my client and ask them about it. Based on that I am choosing the best suitable products and techniques.

No, I don't have experience in retail.
Tell us about your experience as a makeup artist?
I work in the industry since almost ten years. When I started, I was very lucky to be able to learn from the best makeup artists at that time. Since then, I have worked with so many amazing talents and clients that I built up a very diverse skillset and strong portfolio (Please check out: www.yulanmakeupartist.com).
In the past, I have successfully run my beauty salon with six employees. But what I enjoy the most, is to work as a freelancer and collaborate with other great artists.

Weddings are in my opinion the most special events . That’s where my main passion is and what my clients also outside from Indonesia appreciate the most. Therefore, I travel often quit within Southeast Asia and Australia to work for beautiful weddings.
In Bali where I stay, I have worked for all major events like “Design Dope Launch”, “Fashion Show Bali”, “Summer Festivities Kuta Bali”, “Fashion Cabaret” and “Red Carpet Champagne Bar”.
What is the difference between applying makeup for a TV shoot and applying makeup for a live appearance party?
The makeup for TV shoots depends on the theme of the show and must harmonise with the whole environment and scene played. There is also a lot of communication with the director and management team involved.
TV make up usually has a thick base, high countering and thick foundation to make a soft and smoother look on the TV camera.
Party makeup, on the other hand, is something very induvial and unique where glamour looks and smokey eyes play a dominant role. Therefore, a thin base and neutral cheeks are often applied.
How often do you clean your makeup tools such as brushes and combs? How does it affect the wear and tear of your tools and how do you feel about the associated expense?
My tools are carefully washed, sterilised or even replaced after each client. The highest possible hygienic standard and amazing overall customer experience is a key element of my service. Therefore, it is a matter of course that I only work with the best available tools and products.
How do you determine a client’s undertone before you decide what makeup technique to use?
I carefully analyse my client and determine the state of its skin type, facial shape, skin colour but also try to understand its personality and type. Based on that I will discuss my ideas with the client and involve him/her in the process of creating something beautiful together.
What experiences do you have apart from making up characters apart from using typical makeup techniques?
In addition to my work as a makeup artist, I also work as a beauty consultant for various salons, spa’s and hospitality companies where I train the staff.
Due to increasing demand, I am also offering private classes, courses and coachings.
Tell us your most memorable experience so far?
It all started from a dream! I was born on the beautiful island of Java, and I am blessed that I grew with strong influences of the rich and exotic Sundanese culture.
When I was 15 years old, I heard stories about the magical Island of Bali. From then on it was my dream to be in Bali and live a beautiful and colourful life on the beach. Then four years later, I was finally able to wander over to the magical island of gods.
First I started modelling and singing because it made me happy and felt free. After that, I got my makeup diplomas from the famous beauty schools “Martha Tilaar” in Jakarta and “makeup forever” in Singapore.
Since then, I am living my dream and my profession as a makeup artist has brought so many beautiful colours and people in my life.
Life is a blessing, and I am here to embrace life as much as I can. That’s why I love to connect with people and to achieve greatness and happiness together. Because everything starts with a dream.
