"I think people have different definitions of what is deemed "fit". If you have a passion in life for your career, and are dedicated to improving yourself and are constantly working your craft, I think that's what makes you fit to be a model."
Like so many of you, Justin is an aspiring model ready to be discovered. And he has a very interesting current career poles apart from modelling - restoring cars. Yes, thats right. Justin works on cars, and is raring to break into the modelling industry. We love Justin's attitude - a friend suggested he put himself out there, and that's exactly what he did. He went out and got some test shoots, created a social media presence, as well as other marketing avenues.
Justin's raw, vintage look sets him apart from a lot of other models, and there is a huge market for people like Justin. When we noticed him first, we immediately thought of Nolan Ross from the hit TV show, Revenge. He's down to earth, and was so willing to share his story with us. Please enjoy our interview with the charismatic Justin Placek.
Tell us about yourself: Why do you want to work as a model? Why are you interested in modelling as a career?
I'm from Hamburg Germany and planning to relocate to California. I am an aspiring model and actor. I fell into this career path after a friend I met out on a business trip to LA last month got me into it. She's an actress/model herself and suggested I do some shoots and set some up for me and I love the one I've done so far. I had to reschedule a few and have been getting offers while I'm in Germany for when I get back to LA in a couple weeks. I restore cars for a living as my own business. I would love to pursue a career in modeling and acting since it's another creative outlet for me to express myself.
How important is modelling education: Have you attended modelling courses? What related courses or studies have you taken?
I am brand new to the industry, so not yet!
What do you think makes someone “fit” to be a model?
I think people have different definitions of what is deemed "fit". If you have a passion in life for your career and are dedicated to improving yourself and are constantly working your craft, I think that's what makes you fit to be a model. And not just that you have to have the best body, the best face/hair etc. Certainly those help you a little, but it should be about your personality and your work ethic. It shouldn't be based solely on appearance.
What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progressing in this field?
My goals as a model would be to do print/catalog/commercials fashion/high fashion editorial as well as television and film work. My goals are to work on major ad campaigns like Nike, Calvin Klein and other companies like those.
What do you know about the advertisement industry, advertising psychology and photography?
My knowledge of these are pretty limited. My friend I met in LA is a photographer as well as actress and model, and she told me that photography is something you learn a little more about each day. She explained that there's a lot of factors that go into getting a great shot; lighting especially.
How do you communicate with people? Are you patient? Are you friendly? How open are you to clients’ requirements?
I communicate with people face to face usually. I feel that's an easier way to meet new people. I'm a very patient person, except in LA traffic, but that gets to most of the people there. I'm pretty open to new things. I just won't do full nudity or showing anything of that nature. If I can't show it to family friends or a girlfriend, or potential agencies/managers or employers I won't do it. More or less open to discuss client requirements.
Do you eat nutritiously? How often do you exercise or go to the gym?
I try to eat as healthy as possible. I'm starting to cut back on certain foods. I like to keep my health in check and keep up with all my fitness. I usually go to the gym about 5 times a week depending on my work schedule.
What is your dream role as a model?
My dream role as a model would be to land a huge modeling campaign. I would like to book more than one, but to book something along the lines of a fitness brand like Nike or a cool underwear brand like 2xist Calvin Klein or even MeUndies.
State your availability: Would you travel? Work full-time, part-time? Any hours?
I have a business I run, so it's open for discussion. If I'm booked on a paid gig, I can work that into my schedule. Since I don't know day to day what my schedule is like, I'm willing to discuss all of it.
Tell us what's your memorable experience so far.
My most memorable experience so far was probably my first trip to California and meeting my friend Ashley who was the guardian angel who helped get me started in this industry.
