"Models are very special part of a fashion editorial. I love to create a characters with them trough poses and face expressions. Modeling is about playing a role. Once, I worked with a model who was very kind and sweet and at the exact moment we started shooting she transformed herself in a powerful and strong woman."
We first saw Nathan on Instagram. We were searching for #modelcitizenapp and #fashionphotography and we saw his photo. We browsed all his photos on Instagram and yes, his website as well. One word, genius!
He is 18 years old, and we believe he is a genius! We adore his editorial photos because it reminded us a few things while we were watching America's Next Top Model. "Editorial", a word our team would never forget. Tyra used to say that word a lot.
This amazing young guy is not just a genius, but he is also a very approachable guy. We talked to him, and he sent his entry right away. He was so great, humble and most importantly, ambitious.
Yes, Nathan, we believe one day, you will be on those Top Model Shows on TV and rocking it!
How did you get to where you are now in your career?
I started photography 4 years ago and I have been into fashion for 2 years. I am currently a student in communication. If I wasn’t passionate about photography I would work in fashion anyway, because there are so many possibilities to create, such a wonderful world.
How did your education prepare you for the future?
I wasn’t really destined for an artistic future. My father was a policeman and my mother worked in finance. Nevertheless I rapidly understood that I had very precise tastes. I perfectly knew what I found beautiful, firstly in drawing and then through photography.
What person has been your inspiration in life? Who is your hero?
Obviously I have so much admiration for fashion photographers, but actually I love them for their work. I admire Angelina Jolie, out of her new directing filmmaker work which is gorgeous. I like her constant questions as in her speech for Oscars, they are very touching.
Do you feel like you’ve met your goals and are successful?
No, definitely not! I’m grateful for progress but all the best is coming.
If you had to do it over again, what would you change?
Honestly nothing. Every single thing we do is constitutive of who we are and I feel comfortable with who I am and what I do.
What advice would you give someone who is young and wants to have a position such as yours one day?
First of all, to stay young because I’m 18! Otherwise, everyone has to trace his or her own way. The only advice I could give would be to do exclusively what you feel inspired by doing. A lot of young photographers think they have to accept all that they can do for having credibility, and the fashion system works in this way, but I think it’s not true. Photography is a passion affair, grow your creativity and your taste and don’t let the system bully you. There will always be a place for talented people.
How do you stay inspired?
I could be inspired by most insignifiant thing in the world. In an interview JC de Castelbajac said: « Trend, do you know where it borns? It borns in your hurts, in everything you lived, your doubts, in people you miss, in images that hurted you. In two images close to each other; here an ambulance and a wonderful landscape. Here, rules are created and here borns the creation. » That’s quite pictural and philosophical, as a way for considering creation and inspiration but I think this is a gorgeous way.
What photography related things do you recommend?
Material is a thing yes, but I think one of my essentials is the social media Pinterest. It is my reminder for every coming project.
How can people reach you for a job? And how would they know your rate?
My email address: email@example.com or my phone number available on my website www.nathanrobin.com … so call me maybe!
What's your favourite camera?
Canon since the first time and probably for ever.
Tell us something very interesting while working with a model.
Models are very special part of a fashion editorial. I love to create a characters with them trough poses and face expressions. Modeling is about playing a role. Once, I worked with a model who was very kind and sweet and at the exact moment we started shooting she transformed herself in a powerful and strong woman.
We love your account. These are our 2 top favorite photos, can you please tell us about these?
Both are extracted from fashion editorials. All I can say is about the first shot. We were shooting in the wonderful Felicien Hotel and I found out my battery was missing… I had to go back home to taking another battery. Not very glorious but in hindsight that’s funny, this is me, really.
